Lisa van den Berg is a member of The Circle and recently bought her first work of art. Today she shares the story behind the purchase and the special place that the work has been given.

Lisa: “The work I have in my house is called ‘A victory nevertheless’, and was made by Bas Oussoren. I call the work ‘the croissant’. I found the work through a Young Collectors Circle event: the Art is Everywhere edition of the The Collectors Festival in Utrecht. It’s the first work I’ve bought and I’m sure it won’t be the last!”

The nice thing about this work is that it gets stuck in people’s heads. For example, I thought about buying it for 2 months (no joke) and only then did I take the plunge (with some pushing by my direct environment) to send a DM (Direct Message). I often get comments when friends or family come over, like ‘What’s on your wall?!’, only to be told an hour later ‘Yes, it’s actually very beautiful in a weird kind of way.

Because I live in a small apartment, I chose the spot right above the dining table, because it has a connection with food. During the hanging process, the colour scheme also turned out to be a perfect match with the light buttons and buzzer. It results in a colourful collection of hanging objects, which strangely enough all happen to fit together. In addition, I was lucky to have the artist come over to hang the work himself, so the end result is completely ‘artist approved’.

I’m lucky that I work in public transport and therefore don’t have to work at home (a lot). I do think it’s important to turn a house into a home, precisely because I don’t spend a lot of time there. Art and collections certainly contribute to that, because they are so personal. I often sit on the couch in the morning, drinking a cup of coffee and staring at ‘the croissant’. Every time, I discover new colour differences or shapes in the work. I am therefore very happy that this work is the start of my art collection!
